PEER DISCIPLESHIP

"Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep." Rom. 12:15

The importance of being seen and heard:

Even though we have a Heavenly Father who knows us better than we know ourselves, we all need specific people in our lives to be real with. Someone to empathize with our struggles, celebrate in our victories, and encourage us towards an abundant life. Peer discipleship is more than a recurring meeting, but nonetheless, it requires a consistent, repetitive, scheduled meeting with a person who is trained to lead someone in integrated discipleship.
The aim of these meetings is to help the individual be with Jesus, become like Jesus, and do what Jesus did.

Be with Jesus - Help you hear God in the meeting...Discern what God has been speaking to you...Embody God’s love for you...Show you His compassion, comfort, encouragement...Help you experience his presence...Engage in prayer ministry or a listening prayer practice...

Become like Jesus - Help you discover a root of a needed behavior or belief change...Lead you in deliverance or renouncing practices...Read the Bible using Lectio Divina and Discovery Bible Study...

Do what Jesus did - Teach you to obey the teachings of Jesus...Model spiritual disciplines...Help you build a rule of life and a VIM plan...Encourage and equip you to make disciples...

Elements of a discipleship meeting:

Relational Warmth - Relational warmth is you showing up like the person of Jesus. It’s your presence, countenance, how you’re presenting yourself to build trust and value for one another. Examples: Love, Care, Humility, Kindness, Gentleness, Present.

Listening, Empathy, & Question Asking - These help us get to the heart of the matter. What belief or worldview is God uncovering? Listening, empathy, and question asking allows us listen to God and love others through them feeling known. Examples: Belief Tree.

Prayer - This is where we model our dependence on God and need for His grace. Prayer sets our attention on God in the meeting. It’s helpful to pray before you meet. Examples: Confession, Repentance, Inner Healing, Deliverance, Tending Your Heart, Prophetic Ministry, Thanksgiving.

Practices - We want to teach others how to follow Jesus by modeling and teaching different practices to empower others in their own discipleship to Jesus. Examples: DBS, VIM Plan, Forgiveness, Hearing God, Generosity, Service.
