Generosity

1 John 3:17-18 "But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth."

Practice.

OVERVIEW. We are courageously generous with what we have, recognizing that it all was first given to us. This is intentionally choosing to give of our time, talents, and money for the sake of others: we give our money as a first fruit offering, trusting God’s provision in our lives; we give our talents, gifts, and abilities through service to each other; we give our time, which is the most limited resource we have. Our generosity is both a sacrifice and an investment in the Kingdom of God.

PRACTICE. Let's begin by  listening to the Holy Spirit’s prompting in our lives towards generosity. Consider these questions:
  • Jesus, what are ways that I am already giving freely of my time, abilities, and money?
  • Which is the hardest for me to give away: my time, abilities, and provision? Why?
  • Lord, are there ways that my busyness is keeping me from being present and generous with people? How so?
  • How will I be generous today, this week, this month, and this year with my time, my attention, my love, and the kingdom of God? Holy Spirit, what might happen if I am generous with these gifts you've given me?
  • How are you asking me to risk to put myself in a position for other people to reap eternal blessings?

Afterward, consider looping in a friend or spouse. Share what surprised you, what you're proud of, how you've been obedient, ways that Jesus is asking you to go beyond what you're currently doing. Share the practical ways that you want to be generous with your time, abilities, and money.

Further Consideration:
  • Are there ways that I can give out of my lack? Out of the areas that I’m asking God to come?
  • What are specific ways that I can be more present with people for the sake of the Kingdom of God?

BIBLE READING. Read Matthew 25:31-46. Consider:
  • What does this passage say about God?
  • What do I learn about myself and others?
  • What stands out to you and how could that change me?
