LG LEADER GUIDE

Welcome / Share Vision for LG

Briefly welcome the group & pray before eating.

Welcome to life group! Life group is a safe, committed community to walk out our journey with Jesus together.

Dinner / Fellowship (30 mins)
We share dinner together as an act of fellowship. Throughout the gospels, we see Jesus constantly interacting with people over a meal. The act of eating is so universal that eating together both fills a practical need and helps us open up again to community together. As we eat and share, let’s intentionally reflect on God’s presence in our lives. Encourage people to share, not report.

  • What is something you’re thankful for?
  • How have you encountered God this past week?

Optional: you can have the elements of communion to take communion together to start or end the meal.

Bible reading

(15 mins)

Split into groups of 8 or fewer if necessary. Together, read out loud Psalm 104:24-33. Pause for a minute or two after for individual reflection.

Here are some questions for group discussion.
  • What does this passage say about God?
  • What do we learn about ourselves and others?
  • What stands out to you and how could that change you?

Practice: Hearing God through Creation

Read this overview aloud together. (5 mins)

For much of the western church, we don’t have a problem hearing God through his word, through others, or through the Holy Spirit, when compared to talking about hearing God through creation. And yet the bible is clear that God’s glory is on display over all the earth! We can practice reflecting upon creation as a witness to God and speak the truth of the Gospel. Through this, we can see both the nature of God and his relation to us.

As a group (15-25 mins)

We are going to reflect and discuss what the Lord is highlighting and speaking through each of the following meditations or statements. For each one, you can discuss as a group:
  • What attribute of God is highlighted? Or what does this say about God?
  • What does this reveal about man in relation?
  • Is there anything that stands out to you that prompts a change in you?

Here are the meditations / reflections. Read one and allow the group to sit and imagine or think about it for a minute or two before discussing. Then move on to the next.

  • There are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on the Earth. Astronomers estimate that there are somewhere around 70,000 stars for each individual grain of sand.
  • Imagine biting into a ripe juicy piece of fruit - whatever is your favorite - whether a red, warm strawberry that stains the fingers, a juicy peach that drips down your chin, or a fresh picked apple that crunches when you bite into it. Reflect on the flavor, taste, and sensation of eating it.
  • A human being is a complex system consisting of billions of cells, molecules, and processes. Multiple fields of science and medicine are devoted to understanding each part. Yet there are still discoveries and mysteries around how our bodies work, learn, and play. Reflect on just a single system of the body - whether your digestive, respiratory, or nervous system. Think about its purpose and interaction in our lives.
  • Imagine a storm rolling in over the city. What color and shape are the clouds? Is there thunder or lightning accompanying it? How quickly is it moving? How does the wind and rain feel on your skin? How does it smell? Think about both the power and the nurturing nature of water.

On your own during the week

This week, make some time to get out in nature, whether a walk or simply sitting still, to slow down and practice hearing God through creation. This is more than just using nature as a way to focus our awareness on God. This could be anything from walking along the Poudre Trail, visiting a national forest, or watching a sunset.

During this time, try to be aware of what you’re experiencing via all your senses. What is being communicated about God through this experience? What is being communicated about man? Is there anything that the Holy Spirit is highlighting in relation to your current life situation or circumstances? End this time thanking God for what he spoke, for his presence, and for his gift through creation.

End with Prayer

(15 mins)

Split into groups of 2-3 to pray together to end the time. You can either share praise & prayer points or base prayer from what was spoken during the practice. One of the leaders should close out the night with a final prayer and thanking everyone for coming.
