LG LEADER GUIDE

Welcome / Share Vision for LG

Briefly welcome the group & pray before eating.

Welcome to life group! Life group is a safe, committed community to walk out our journey with Jesus together.

Dinner / Fellowship (30 mins)
We share dinner together as an act of fellowship. Throughout the gospels, we see Jesus constantly interacting with people over a meal. The act of eating is so universal that eating together both fills a practical need and helps us open up again to community together. As we eat and share, let’s intentionally reflect on God’s presence in our lives. Encourage people to share, not report.

  • What is something you’re thankful for?
  • How have you encountered God this past week?

Optional: you can have the elements of communion to take communion together to start or end the meal.

Bible reading

(10-15 mins)

Split into groups of 8 or fewer if necessary. Together, read out loud 1 Corinthians 14:1-5 . Pause for a minute or two after for individual reflection.

Here are some questions for group discussion.
  • What does this passage say about God?
  • What do we learn about ourselves and others?
  • What stands out to you and how could that change you?

Practice: Prophecy

Read this overview aloud together. (5 mins)

Prophecy is to hear and speak God’s voice on behalf of an individual or group. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit that is meant for all believers. Throughout the bible, from Moses to Paul, the admonition and prayer is that we all would desire the gift of prophecy. It is for our upbuilding, encouragement, and consolation of believers. As followers of Christ, we get to practice and grow in it; it’s not something we’ll get right all the time. Even when we get it wrong, if shared and received well, it can increase our intimacy with God and relationship with others.

As a group (15-25 mins)

Small group gatherings such as life groups are perfect opportunities to practice hearing god for others and sharing it in a safe space in community. We’re going to use the following steps to practice prophesying. Remember that especially while practicing, we are not sharing any dates, mates, direction or correction. We’re also holding all prophetic words loosely and weighing them against the word of God in our lives which actually better honors the gift and the sharer.

Give 5-10 mins for the first part of silently praying and hearing God. Then announce a shift and move into worship and share the words for another 10-20 mins. Read the following steps aloud before starting:

  • Bring an individual to mind.
  • Begin to pray for them by yourself; prophecy comes from a heart posture of love and care. You can use Colossians 1:9-11 or other crafted prayers to help.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit, “What do you want to tell them?” Listen to the Holy Spirits’ response. You can always ask if there’s more to share or for clarification about what a picture or word may mean. But it’s also important to not try to analyze or worry about a word being perfect.
  • Humbly and graciously share the word with the individual.
  • Ask them if that feels accurate or impactful to them. This helps to encourage them to weigh the word aloud. This can help the sharer build confidence through encouragement when we hear rightly or building trust between both individuals when we miss it.
  • Then pray together using the word or response as a launching pad.

Some worship songs you could use during this time are
Firm Foundation - Maverick City Music
Have it All - Bethel Music

On your own during the week

Receiving and sharing prophetic words is absolutely something you can do on your own throughout the week! In your daily time with the Lord, you can ask him to highlight an individual or begin to pray about someone who is already on your mind. Then after asking the Holy Spirit what he wants to tell them that day, you can simply text, call, or message them with the prophetic word as an encouragement! It is just as powerful to receive an unexpected message from someone’s prayer as it is to hear in person.

Close in prayer

(5 mins)

Close out the night with a final prayer together thanking God for his nearness, for speaking to and through us, and for grace to practice and learn. Thank everyone for coming.
